No matter what type type of designer you are there will come a time in your career where its important to showcase experience. My content management of choice is WordPress because of the simplicity of WordPress’ admin panel. As many of you have probably figured out there are tons of premium WordPress themes for sale out at places like Envato’s ThemeForest Marketplace. Now, I’m not knocking premium themes, but have you stumbled across the free ones?

Creative by Nature is a free portfolio theme created by CSSMayo.com and released especially for Smashing Magazine and its readers. The designers created a funky theme, particularly useful for artists, photographers and designers who are looking for a flexible portfolio solution. The theme’s .zip-package includes all necessary files, server installation guide and a help file which describes how to add entries to your portfolio section. Besides, a PSD source file is available for free download as well.

Gallery is a great WordPress theme Built by Chris Wallace. He’s made a recent update to the old files that were originally posted to Smashing Magazine. This theme is nice to showcase your designs by category. Each image links to a post where you can provide a write up about the project.

Portfolio WordPress Theme is a wordpress theme designed for web portfolios and (for now) just for web portfolios. It is coming with an Administrative Panel from where you can edit the head quote text, you can edit all theme colors, font families, font sizes and you can fill a curriculum vitae and display it into a special page. Pretty Cool, eh?

Viewport, a free WordPress theme created by Paul Bennett is focused around a clean and simple, content based layout. The aim is to grab the user’s attention and draw them straight into the content. On the single post page the content is laid out clearly in full, with post controls and a widget-enabled sidebar. The theme also allows the blog owner to change the background image and color, and the image of the ‘Where Next?’ page.
